Statac

Build your personal site

A walk-through in parts, from an empty folder to a personal site on the web.

This tutorial builds Hill Notes, a small personal site where Ailsa writes up her walks in the Scottish hills. Each part ends with something you can see in the browser.

You need Statac installed, a terminal, a text editor and a browser. You write everything in plain files: Markdown for the pages, HTML for the templates.

The parts

  1. Make the site: start a new site, and see it in the browser.
  2. Write the first page: an About page, published before the site has any templates.
  3. Give it a frame: a template and a stylesheet that every page shares.
  4. Add the walks: dated posts, a page listing them, and a home page.
  5. Build and publish: build the site, and put it on a web host.
